Description
Uki Waza is a side sacrifice throwing technique in Judo where the tori (executor) drops to their side to unbalance and throw the uke (opponent) in a circular motion. This technique is one of the original 40 throws developed by Jigoro Kano and is classified under Yoko-sutemi-waza (side sacrifice techniques). The technique emphasizes using the opponent's forward momentum against them while the thrower sacrifices their own balance to execute the throw. Uki Waza embodies the Judo principle of "maximum efficiency with minimum effort" by utilizing leverage and timing rather than brute strength.
Common Applications
Uki Waza is particularly effective when:
- The opponent is advancing forward aggressively or overcommitting
- Countering an opponent's forward pressure or attack
- The opponent steps forward into your space
- Transitioning from failed standing techniques
- Creating opportunities through timing and leverage rather than strength
- Teaching fundamental principles of balance breaking (kuzushi) and momentum usage
- Demonstrating sacrifice technique concepts in kata practice
