How are BJJ techniques organized?

BJJ techniques are organized by combat phases (standing, guard, mount, etc.), positions (closed guard, side control, back control), and mechanics (submissions, sweeps, escapes, passes). This systematic approach helps understand the flow and strategy of grappling.

What are the fundamental BJJ positions?

The fundamental BJJ positions include guard (closed, open, half), mount, side control, back control, knee on belly, and standing. Each position has specific advantages, escape routes, and submission opportunities.

What is the difference between a sweep and a submission?

A sweep is a technique used to reverse positions, typically from guard to a dominant position on top. A submission is a technique designed to force your opponent to surrender, such as chokes or joint locks.

How do I choose which techniques to learn first?

Focus on fundamental techniques from basic positions first: escapes from mount and side control, basic guard retention, simple submissions like rear naked choke and armbar, and fundamental sweeps. Build your foundation before learning advanced techniques.
