Turning, literally "change/conversion" — from ten (転, "to turn, revolve") and kan (換, "to exchange, replace"). Describes pivoting the body (usually about 180° on the front foot) to blend with or redirect the opponent's force, so that tori ends up facing the same direction as uke rather than meeting them head-on. Usage context: Primarily an aikido term, where it forms a pair with irimi (入り身, direct entering): irimi steps into the opponent's line, tenkan turns off it. Tai-no-henko / tenkan-ho are standard aikido drills. In judo and jujutsu instruction it is used informally for pivoting entries, e.g. the turn-in on forward throws such as seoi-nage or harai-goshi, but it is not part of formal Kodokan technique names.
