Description

A leg-entanglement sacrifice throw (yoko-sutemi-waza) in which tori coils one leg around the opponent's leg while controlling the upper body, then drops backward or to the side to topple them with the leg still trapped. Adopted by the Kodokan as a Shinmeisho no Waza, it is one of judo's four forbidden techniques (kinshi-waza) and draws hansoku-make (disqualification) because the entangled fall endangers the opponent's knee and head. The same motion remains a legal, rarely used winning technique (kimarite) in sumo, while the broader grapevine appears in sambo and freestyle wrestling.
