One hand, from kata (片, "one side, one of a pair") and te (手, "hand"). Marks a technique performed with a single hand or arm, as opposed to two-handed (morote, 諸手) variants. Usage context: Appears as a prefix in formal Kodokan names such as katate-jime (one-hand choke, one of the shime-waza). Common in aikido as katate-dori (one-hand wrist grab, with gyaku-hanmi and ai-hanmi variants) and in karate. Not to be confused with kata (肩, "shoulder") as in kata-guruma or kata-gatame: the romaji is the same but the kanji and meaning differ.
