Description
A modern guard pass built specifically to defeat half-guard-family defenses (including Quarter Guard) that rely on underhook or ankle control. Instead of fighting the underhook head-on, the top player steps the trailing leg back and around, changing angle so the bottom player's frames and grips get forced out of position and can no longer reach the passer's center of gravity — the pass that made half guard "feel lost and helpless" against players unfamiliar with it, per Emily Kwok's description of it. Against Quarter Guard specifically, one system (Wim Deputter's "The Mirroring Principle: Quantum Half Guard") frames the backstep as a decision point: it either completes into a full pass, or — if the bottom player stuffs it — branches into a leg attack such as the Texas Cloverleaf. Sourcing note: structural understanding is solid across multiple independent sources, but grip-by-grip mechanics could not be confirmed from primary video due to access limits — treat step-by-step detail as pending verification.
