- BJJ: Coyote Sweep
Description
The core sweep of Lucas Leite's Coyote Guard system. With a deep underhook to the opponent's far hip and the bottom hook controlling their far leg, the attacker keeps constant outward rotational tension on the opponent's near knee — a detail that discourages the opponent from flattening out without risking their own knee. Using leg-driven kuzushi (unbalancing generated primarily through the legs rather than upper-body strength), the attacker rotates and drives through the opponent's base, taking them off-balance and to the mat. Prized for letting smaller grapplers sweep much heavier opponents through leverage and knee-lever mechanics rather than strength.
Common Applications
Base sweep off the Coyote Guard underhook control; often drilled in isolation (legs-only unbalancing drill) before adding the underhook and full sweep.
