Description
A side sacrifice throw (yoko-sutemi-waza) similar in entry to Kata Guruma — tori lifts uke across the shoulders/upper body — but instead of staying on the feet to complete the throw, tori sacrifices to the side/ground to drive uke over and down. Described in The Canon of Judo as a reference technique and demonstrated by Kyuzo Mifune in The Essence of Judo.
Common Applications
A reference technique from The Canon of Judo, unrecognized by the Kodokan and categorized there as Yoko-sutemi (side sacrifice) rather than a standing throw — this is what separates it from its close relative Kata Guruma, which is thrown from the feet. Mostly of historical/kata interest; not part of modern competitive judo.
