False Half Guard

Variation of: Half Guard

A turtle-adjacent bottom position where the defender has stepped one leg over one of the top player's legs. Visually it reads as a compromised spot — resembling either a half guard already being passed or a turtle about to be flattened — but it is a deliberately offensive setup rather than a defensive guard-retention position. The bottom player prioritizes fighting for an underhook, then uses that control to attack: controlling with the "Overwrap," sweeping with the "Zenga Roll," or transitioning into a related position called "Shelf." Popularized by Craig Jones as part of a modern no-gi bottom-game system, taught alongside his reverse Z-guard in the "Power Bottom" instructional (also released as The B-Team Bottom Game, Vol. 4). Single-source terminology (one instructor's system) — treat similarly to Lockdown (Eddie Bravo) or Coyote Guard (Lucas Leite) as instructor-attributed but published.
