Description

A fundamental technique that serves dual purposes: as a pinning technique (Osaekomi-waza) in Judo and as a blood choke in BJJ/MMA. The practitioner wraps their arm around the opponent's neck and one arm, creating a triangle of pressure using their arm, the opponent's shoulder, and their own shoulder.
In Judo, it's primarily used as a control position (kata-gatame), while in BJJ it's developed into a submission by applying lateral pressure to the carotid arteries. The technique can be applied from side control, mount, or as a transition from other positions. One of the seven recognized Osaekomi-waza in Kodokan Judo and a fundamental submission in modern grappling.

Common Applications

In Judo: Primary function as an Osaekomi-waza (pinning technique) to control and dominate opponent on the ground. Often transitioned to from Kesa-gatame when opponent exposes their arm. Used to score ippon through 20-second hold in competition. In BJJ/MMA: Powerful submission technique that applies blood choke to carotid arteries. Excellent follow-up to failed guard passes or when opponent attempts to escape side control. Can be set up from mount, side control, or north-south positions. Popular in no-gi grappling due to reliability without gi grips.
