Description
A hip bump sweep variant run from octopus guard, popularized by Neil Melanson (Ground Marshal Half Guard) and Craig Jones. It follows the mechanics of a standard hip bump sweep from closed guard, but instead of blocking the opponent's posting arm, the bottom player blocks the opponent's leg — since the octopus grip has already neutralized the arm side. The bottom player reads the opponent's pressure/reaction, transitions grip from elbow to hand along the back, then bumps the hips into the opponent while blocking their base leg to roll them over into a top position (often side control), commonly chasing a guard pass into a head-and-arm choke. Craig Jones's version is frequently entered off a kosoto hook.
Common Applications
Used when the opponent defends the standard octopus guard sit-up sweep by posting or driving pressure forward — the hip bump redirects that pressure using a leg block instead of an arm block. Frequently chained into a guard pass and head-and-arm choke (Melanson) or into front headlock / Buggy Choke entries (Jones).
