Description
Outer wraparound: a side sacrifice throw (yoko-sutemi-waza) in which tori keeps the sleeve grip, releases the lapel hand, and swings that arm over uke's same-side arm, clamping it tightly under tori's armpit. Tori then turns in so their back is against uke's front, places the near leg across the outside of uke's leg as a block, and falls forward and to the side, winding uke around tori's body and landing on top of them. The defining action is the outside arm wrap — uke's arm is trapped outside tori's body ("soto"), unlike harai-makikomi and hane-makikomi, where the wrap finishes a hip-throw entry. One of the Kodokan Gokyo throws (4th group).
Common Applications
Classic follow-up when a forward throw (tai otoshi, harai goshi, seoi nage) stalls: tori releases the lapel and commits to the wrap rather than abandoning the attack. In no-gi, it is entered straight off a single overhook — the overhook is already the wrap, so tori only needs to turn in and drop. Tori usually lands chest-down on uke and can settle directly into a scarf-hold (kesa-gatame) style side control.
