Description
Spring hip throw: a hip technique (koshi-waza) in which tori turns in as for o-goshi, loads uke against the body, then carries uke on a bent "springing" leg placed against uke's inner thigh/hip and springs upward while rotating to throw uke forward. One of the original 40 Kodokan throws (Gokyo, third group / Dai Sankyo) and part of the current Kodokan list. Closely resembles uchi-mata, but the leg springs against the thigh rather than reaping between the legs. A standard, legal throw with no ruleset prohibitions.
Common Applications
Most easily set up from kenka-yotsu (opposing grips) against an upright opponent being drawn forward, with the lifting hand raising and the pulling hand drawing uke into the throw. Commonly hit off uke's retreating step — pushing uke back, then throwing forward as they re-step. Belongs to the hip-throw cluster and is interchanged with uchi-mata and harai-goshi off the same entry, switching the leg action to uke's reaction. Leads to strong newaza: an armbar if sleeve control is kept standing, or kesa-gatame / side-control submissions if following to the mat. When uke resists, it commits into hane-makikomi. Works as both a direct attack and a counter.
