Description
A hip throw (koshi-waza) closely related to Hane Goshi: tori turns in and loads uke against the body as in O Goshi, then places a bent leg against uke and springs/rotates to throw uke backward over the leg rather than forward. The "rear" in the name refers to this backward throwing direction, distinguishing it from Hane Goshi's forward finish. Not recognized by the Kodokan as an official throw.
Common Applications
A reference technique from The Canon of Judo, not one of the Kodokan's 40/67 official throws — sourced from Kyuzo Mifune's demonstration in The Essence of Judo. The written text describes the springing leg catching uke's hip, but Mifune's own demonstration catches the inner thigh instead, so the two primary sources disagree slightly on the exact contact point. Mostly of historical/kata interest rather than modern competitive use.
