Description
A half guard pass built on the wrestling sit-through movement, so named because of the complete positional change the passer's hips go through. From top half guard, the passer pummels an arm around the bottom player's crossface-blocking hands, changes angle to a cross-body alignment, and flattens the opponent out by driving forward — elbow pinched tight above the opponent's near elbow, hips connected. The passer then brings the near knee in to touch the far knee and 'walks' the trapped foot from toe to heel until that shin points straight up, completing the hip switch into a dominant cross-body position. Can also be entered directly from a standing/kneeling guard-break: stepping the lead leg between the opponent's legs and switching the hips on the way down. Widely regarded as a cornerstone black-belt-level half guard pass, and forms the base for related kimura-trap systems.
Common Applications
Primary answer to a bottom player who's shut down the standard underhook/crossface battle in top half guard; also usable as a direct entry from standing/kneeling when passing into half guard rather than out of it.
