Description

The John Wayne is a half-guard sweep where the bottom player traps one of the opponent's legs (typically via the lockdown), secures the opponent's far arm so they cannot post, and rolls them over the top toward the underhook side. The signature finish ends with the sweeper "saddling up" — knees landing astride the opponent in mount — which is where the cowboy/John Wayne name comes from. It's a fundamental sweep in the 10th Planet half guard system but is widely used across gi and no-gi BJJ.
