Description
A fundamental Judo throw classified as Ashi-waza (foot technique) where the practitioner (tori) reaps the opponent's (uke) supporting leg from the outside while simultaneously pushing their upper body backward. The technique involves three phases: kuzushi (unbalancing the opponent to their rear corner), tsukuri (positioning close with the attacking leg behind their leg), and kake (executing the reap with a powerful sweeping motion while driving them backward with the hands).
One of the original 40 throws developed by Jigoro Kano and fundamental to both Judo and BJJ standing techniques.
Common Applications
Fundamental standing technique effective against opponents who step back or resist forward pressure. Excellent against taller opponents due to the high target leg position. Commonly used as a counter to failed forward throws or when opponent tries to circle away. In BJJ, often combined with upper body control for takedown scenarios. Can be chained with other Ashi-waza techniques like O-uchi-gari or Ko-soto-gari. Effective in both gi and no-gi applications, though grip variations differ.
