Description
An eponymous half-guard sweep popularized by Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro. From the knee-shield half guard, the bottom player off-balances the top player forward and rolls backward in a way that forces the opponent into a forward roll, coming up on top as they tumble over. Mechanically it is essentially a back roll that only works because the opponent is put in a position where they must roll forward. Famous as a flashy-but-high-percentage reversal.
Common Applications
Hit from the knee-shield half guard, most often when the top player postures up and drives forward to pass — the sweep redirects that forward pressure, off-balancing them toward their head so they're forced into a forward roll while you come up on top, typically into top half or a passing position (and chasing the back if they turtle through). It pairs with the rest of the knee-shield half-guard attacks, each threat opening the others, and is a high-percentage competition sweep scoring 2 points in IBJJF on the reversal.
