Description
A bottom half-guard sweep that punishes an opponent who reaches their arm underneath to weave between the legs for the bottom player's far grip (typically hunting the lapel to smash-pass). The bottom player traps that wrist so it can't be freed, grabs the outside of the opponent's pant leg (or underhooks/hooks the hamstring in no-gi), pulls in tight while shielding the chin with the shoulder to prevent a crossface, then rotates the hips toward the wrist-control side and kicks the leg straight to tip the opponent over. As the opponent tips, the bottom player pushes the trapped leg away and back-steps to their knees, taking the head and looking for a far-side underhook into side control.
Common Applications
Specifically punishes the common half-guard passing habit of digging an arm underneath the legs to secure a lapel or cross-grip for a smash pass — the reach itself is what gets trapped and turned into the sweep.
