- BJJ: Buggy Choke
Blood choke via leg loop around the neck — carotid-compression risk comparable to a triangle choke, applied from a bottom/pinned position.
Primary risk to: Receiver (uke)
Description
A leg-based blood choke attacked from the bottom of side control, credited to Austin Hardt and popularized in competition by Derek Rayfield and Kade Ruotolo. From a Mission Control-style hug on the opponent's near leg/hip with the forearm framing their head down, the attacker traps the opponent's head and near arm, then closes a loop with their own same-side leg (crossing the feet/ankles) to compress the carotid arteries — using the opponent's own forward pressure against them as they try to pass. A less common entry starts from flattened half guard, threading the leg loop as the opponent consolidates a pass. Closely related to the Fly Trap, with practitioners commonly flowing between the two depending on which side the opponent defends.
Common Applications
Submission-from-bottom-side-control, especially against opponents who get complacent or heavy-pressure while consolidating the pass; also a live threat if the opponent stalls in side control. Can transition into or out of the Fly Trap, or chain to the Electric Chair if the trapped arm is freed.
