Description
A wrestling single leg defense popularized by collegiate coach Cary Kolat. Used once the opponent has secured a head-inside single leg and the defender is already compromised on the mat: the defender dives to the side, chasing and attacking the opponent's near ankle with both hands, then rolls underneath the opponent to end up facing the opposite direction, on the belly. From there the defender switches the feet to the opposite side, threads an arm between the opponent's legs to control both legs and free the other hand, then drives back into the opponent, sinks the hips, straightens the trapped leg, and turns on top to gain control. A mat-level counterpart to Victor's Roll — both convert a defended single leg into an offensive position, but Funk Roll is entered from an already-grounded scramble rather than the standing whizzer stage, and ends in top control rather than a leg lock.
Common Applications
Mat-level scramble response to a secured head-inside single leg, when the initial whizzer/standing defense has failed and the defender is already compromised or grounded; converts a defended takedown directly into top control rather than resetting to neutral.
